Seek Adventure Travel Happy
2015 is fast approaching, so fast I have to keep reminding myself that it's December. How did that happen? In two short weeks we will be getting ready to ring in the new year and most of us will be listing off resolutions...lose 10 pounds, floss more, stress less, drink less etc. If you want an idea of others, here's a list of the 10 most broken new year's resolutions. Over the years I broke more resolutions than I've kept by far!
Two years ago I decided to change that up. I resolved to go on more adventures and to drink more champagne... Guess what? It was an awesome year! How could it not be, right?! I snorkeled with sea turtles, went on my first trip to NYC, drank champagne all the time, just because I could.
So, I've decided to no longer make resolutions that make me feel bad about the person I am today, but resolve to do things that make be happier and are true to me.
To get you started, I've created 15 resolutions for you to consider for 2015. Each resolution has a corresponding travel destination for optimum encouragement. Pick one, pick all of them. Most importantly, do something in 2015 that will truly make you happy.
15 Resolutions for 2015
1. Indulge more
Sleep in, eat the cake, read the trashy romance novel. You've got a guilty pleasure. Resolve to stop feeling guilty about it and indulge more. Where better than Italy to start indulging more? Home of La Dolce Vita, and a laid back way of life. Italians don't rush anything, and know how to savor the best in life. Start doing the same.
2. Go on more adventures
I picked this one for myself a couple of years ago because, despite my travel lust, I need a bit of push when things seem a bit scary. Whenever we come across a waterfall, Pat is the first to strip down and jump in. I never do, I sit there trying to pull myself in, but can't seem to get past thinking about how cold it is, that I might land on rocks...the list goes on. And while caution is not a bad thing, too much of it is. Resolve to get over your fears and try something scary. Get scuba certified, go skydiving, backpack through Europe. Whatever you've been too afraid to try, do it this year. And while you're at, pay a visit to New Zealand, the home of adventure. They invented bungee jumping and you'll find it hard to not find something daring to do.
3. Drink more champagne
I like this one because there's something celebratory about champagne and it just lifts the spirits more than other drinks, I think it's the bubbles. Don't wait for anniversaries or birthdays to break out the champagne. There are lots of reasons to celebrate all year long. Finally finish a big project? It's Friday? Even if you can't think of anything, having champagne is reason enough to celebrate! Where better to travel than the home of the real deal, France!
4. Have more me time
A lot of us are busy, super busy. It's hard to get everything done, let alone find time for yourself. This year, make me time a priority. Take long baths, go for long walks, go get a massage. If you don't take time for yourself, you'll eventually break down and ugly cry for seemingly no reason. Ideally you should take at least 30 minutes a day just for you. If it makes it easier, put it on your calendar so you wont' allow yourself to schedule meetings or appointments when you should be having a dance party in your office. I think I could really focus on some me time, in the Swiss Alps....yeah, I think I can!
5. Show some love
Make sure that the most important people in your life know how much you love them. You never know when you may get hit by a bus or when, while completing resolution #2, everything's going to go wrong. Stop missing opportunities to show some love. Kiss your spouse or significant other every time you leave the house and as soon as you get home. Do little things for each other that will make their day easier. Not only will they be feeling the love, but you will too. Now that you're in the loving feeling, how about a trip to Hawaii? Romantic strolls on the beach, macadamia nut pancakes for breakfast, and little drinks with umbrellas. Sounds like the perfect ingredients for a romantic get away to me!
6. Dance more
I used to turn on music in the morning and dance around while I got ready for the day. Somewhere along the line I stopped doing that. Why? Dancing is the best! It's good for us, it makes us feel good. It's a great way to start the day, or just for an awesome happy break in the day. Resolve to dance more, even if you don't think you're any good. Being good at it isn't the point. The point is to let it all hang out now and then, and to not take yourself too seriously. Really want to get your dancing on? Go to Argentina! It's not uncommon to see people dancing in the street, it's part of the culture. Get your dancing shoes on!
7. Try more new things
Try new foods, new music, new movies, try all the things you haven't tried but wanted to! Always wanted to go surfing? Do it! Pat and I were just talking about our travel styles the other day. He likes to pick one place and stay there for a week. I like to hop around a bit. And it's not because I don't like to relax, but it's because I want to try EVERYTHING. I want to see everything. I don't want to miss a single thing! So for me, it might be good to just pick a place and really get to know it as much as I can for a week. Whatever it is for you, try it. Get out of your comfort zone! I can't think of a better place to try a million new things than Japan!
8. Eat more dessert
Dessert is my favorite, and I know I'm not alone. If you like this idea, but don't like the idea of weighing 300 pounds. Eat dessert first. So many times I've had dinner and then was too full for dessert and then I was sad. A few times I've ordered dessert first and then ended up not getting a regular meal, and it was amazing! What's the point of being an adult if you can't eat cake whenever you want? For more dessert, I'm going to Greece, which is actually where cheesecake was invented. They must know what they're doing!
9. Accept yourself
Now, before I go too far, I want to say that yes, I have written plenty of posts on how to better yourself. But, to a certain extent we need to just accept ourselves the way we are today. Are we a work in progress, and are we constantly working to be better tomorrow, yes! But, you're all you have today, so love yourself. I know lots of people who wouldn't go swimming at one point or another because they didn't want people to see them in a swim suite. Don't do that to yourself. Don't deny yourself fun because you don't think you deserve it...you do! We all do! Need a little inspiration? Go to NYC. That is a city of people letting their freak flag fly. Do the thing that will make you happy, no matter how silly you think you'll look!
10. Laugh more
Life is stressful, and there will always be things that cause stress. So instead of trying to do the impossible by eliminating stress, resolve to laugh more. Watch funny movies, surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Laughter really is the best medicine. The best place to get you laughing until your side hurts...Chicago! Chicago is home to world famous comedy clubs and has brought us some of the funniest people ever, from John Belushi, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Bill Murray....I could go on and on!
11. Spend more time outside
This is not necessarily code for exercise more, so don't dismiss this because you know you're going to fail at exercising more. This could just be you sitting outside with a cup of coffee instead of at your kitchen table, having lunch outside, reading a book at the park etc. And yes, you can exercise some if that's what you really want to do. But the point of this one is to breath in some fresh air, enjoy the sounds of the birds chirping, and literally smelling the roses. Want to really spend some time enjoying the outdoors, head to the Netherlands. The Netherlands is world famous for their tulip fields and windmills. I dare you to try and walk through these fields and not feel ridiculously happy afterwards!
12. Do more things that scare you
So, this isn't necessarily about going on more adventures, like in #2, but doing something that you want to but won't because you're afraid. Want to sing, but have stage fright? Want to enter an art competition, ask for a raise, act in a play, travel solo? This is the year for you to say that you're not going to spend your life afraid. When we're all old and on our death beds, I guarantee we are going to regret not trying something more than failing at it. For this challenge, how about Antarctica? Not only will you get to see icebergs and penguins, but you'll get to experience a place that took true courage to discover and explore.
13. Stop adding things to your bucket list
Bucket lists are not meant to be a collection of things that you wish you could do. They're meant to be things you are going to do. Start doing them today! I want you to spend this year checking things off lists. Stop just dreaming and start doing! You may have always wanted to take a cooking class, or go on a hot air balloon ride. These are easily accomplished things, seriously, what's stopping you? Get up and start doing those things. Can you imagine how awesome you're going to feel next December looking back at all the awesome things you finally got around to doing? What's a bucket list worthy destination? Mt. Kilimanjaro. Thanks to us destroying the planet, there will not always be snow atop Mt. Kilimanjaro. So you best get climbing! No more delaying!
14. Be happy
Seriously, just be happy. Be happy with yourself, with what you have, with each and every day. Resolve to find something in every day to be happy about. And if you can't think of anything at all, then do something from 1-13...there's something there that will make you smile, I promise! This one isn't always easy. Sometimes we get off to a bad start, whenever you find yourself slipping into a crappy day. Stop and do something for you. The best place to be happy? Denmark! Denmark was ranked as the happiest place in the world. And just look at the happy colors they paint their houses! Just looking at this picture makes me smile!
15. Travel more
Get out there, whether it's to a neighboring state, or across the globe. Start exploring as much of this amazing world as you can. Traveling will be the single thing that will help you accomplish goals 1-14 on this list.
Let's make 2015 the best year ever!
Hi there! I'm Skeeter. I grew up moving a lot and that makes me a bit restless for travel and exploration. I started this blog with my husband Pat when we decided to backpack New Zealand for a year. We are always looking for the next adventure and are loving life. We're just your average couple with two sassy dogs and a love for travel. We're sharing our travels and the tips we pick up along the way.
Hello! I'm Liz. Blogging is very new to me, but I'm so excited to finally write as much as I talk!
