Seek Adventure Travel Happy
Was that just the fastest craziest week ever, or is it just me?! This week is marking the end of my 20's but also the beginning of what is sure to be another amazing decade. I have no doubt that the future holds many new destinations, discoveries, and adventures.
And good travel deals makes that a bit easier. Around here though, I like to keep it real. I just could not find anything that knocked my socks off for the Friday Travel Deal Alert. Sure, there were flights that were a little cheaper than normal, but that's nothing to shout from the rafters about.
A friend of mine, Sarah, recently commented that she found cheaper tickets to Iceland than she could fly to Nashville for...that's the kind of deal to stoked about.
So instead of wasting your time, telling you about the only mediocre deals that I could find today (there's enough mediocrity out there already), I thought I would share some thoughts on the value of certain travel deals.
So, when I'm bringing you the Friday Travel Deal Alert, I'm not just bringing you the cheapest flight I can find. I'm also trying to take into account how safe the location is. I see deals all the time to Mexico, but I cannot in good conscience recommend a trip to Mexico.
I know lots of people who have gone, and survived just fine. But they always say it with the caveat "As long as you stay at the resort, you're fine". I do not want to be held hostage while I'm on vacation, and you shouldn't feel like you are in danger, just by leaving your hotel. We had a stop in Mexico on a cruise a couple years ago, and I felt that same trepidation about exploring on my own.
I just heard a report about a man from Oregon who went on vacation to Mexico, got seriously hurt while at the beach. The hospital demanded $30,000 dollars before they would treat him. The family complied by maxing out credit cards. Once the hospital had that money...they demanded more. The family, desperate, arranged for a medical flight to fly him to San Diego for treatment, and the Mexican hospital refused to let him leave until they are paid the money they are demanding. Talk about a nightmare, which is nothing compared to the American on a motorcycle trip across Mexico that they found in pieces in the desert.
This is on top of the risk of being caught up in the ever dangerous drug warfare that is going on down there. I don't want to single Mexico out, there's lots of dangerous places to travel. Liberian hotels are probably offering awesome deals right now, but you might just get Ebola.
Many of the most dangerous places to travel, you'll know about. But, if you haven't been watching the news for a while, because it's just too depressing, or just want to be safe and double check before you book that great deal, use the State Department. They have alerts and general guidelines (such as required vaccinations) for traveling everywhere in the world.
The State Department errors on the side of caution. There are safety tips for everywhere, even the safest spots. For the serious ones though, they will flat out say, that they recommend against "non-essential" travel. Essential as in, you're working for the WHO on the Ebola crises, or some other life and death situation. If you decide to toss caution to the wind, be sure to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, so that the State Department knows where to send Al Gore when you need rescued from North Korea.
The bottom line is, not all deals are worth the danger. There's certainly some value to piece of mind for both you and your family.
And on that overly serious note, have an awesome weekend, and thank for stopping by!
Hi there! I'm Skeeter. I grew up moving a lot and that makes me a bit restless for travel and exploration. I started this blog with my husband Pat when we decided to backpack New Zealand for a year. We are always looking for the next adventure and are loving life. We're just your average couple with two sassy dogs and a love for travel. We're sharing our travels and the tips we pick up along the way.
Hello! I'm Liz. Blogging is very new to me, but I'm so excited to finally write as much as I talk!
