Shoulder Season is a well known time to travel to save some money and avoid crowds. Shoulder season, in general terms, is spring and fall. Summer is when most people take vacation, because kids are out of school and the weather is great. Winter is full of Christmas, New Years and ski vacations. There are some notable exceptions though:
1. Festivals: Oktoberfest falls during a shoulder season. But if you're wanting to get a hotel room in Germany during Oktoberfest, you're going to be hard pressed to find a deal. This goes for other big festivals, religious celebrations, etc.
2. Bad weather: Generally you'll find good weather during shoulder seasons, but there's always exceptions. For example, you may find a really good deal to the Bahamas in September, but be aware that that is hurricane season. That doesn't mean that there WILL be one, but there could.
3. Spring Breakers: Spring break often occurs during shoulder season. So if you decide to go somewhere frequented by spring breakers (Cabo, Cancun etc) in the spring, be aware that you may find yourself in the middle of a wet t-shirt contest, for better or worse.
Here are some general guidelines on where and when to go during shoulder seasons:
March: Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, Ireland
April: Australia, Europe, Caribbean
May: Japan, Mediterranean, Australia
June: Thailand, Baja California
September: Montana, S. Africa
October: Mediterranean, Dubai, Vancouver Island-Canada
November: Tahiti, Fiji, S. Pacific, Caribbean
December (early): Rockies, Alps, Costa Rica
This certainly isn't a complete list of where you can go...it's a big world out there. This should get you started though.
Have a great week, and happy travels!
Hi there! I'm Skeeter. I grew up moving a lot and that makes me a bit restless for travel and exploration. I started this blog with my husband Pat when we decided to backpack New Zealand for a year. We are always looking for the next adventure and are loving life. We're just your average couple with two sassy dogs and a love for travel. We're sharing our travels and the tips we pick up along the way.
Hello! I'm Liz. Blogging is very new to me, but I'm so excited to finally write as much as I talk!
