Seek Adventure Travel Happy
The holidays are just around the corner, so what better time to snuggle up with a blanket and a cup of cocoa and a good movie?!
I've put together a list of 10 of my favorite travel movies to inspire your next trip. While this is certainly not a complete list of all the great travel movies out there (there are only 10 after all), this will provide hours of screen time for a truly binge worth winter break. Stock up on popcorn and candy!
In no particular order....
1. Roman Holiday: 1953
A classic romantic comedy that takes you on a tour of Rome. Filled with gelato, vespas, and a sense of adventure. I love this movie!
2. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: 2013
I was talking to someone once, and they said they hated this movie. They just couldn't relate with the character. At that moment, I realized that they and I would never be true friends. I completely identified with the character of Walter Mitty, and really what normal person doesn't on some level? It's a story about a man who has a nice life, but can't help but daydream and wish he had been braver, more adventurous, and lived life to the fullest. There's beautiful scenery and adventures to experience in this one. If you haven't seen it, give it a try!
3. The Beach: 2000
After this movie came out, people couldn't help but think how great it would be to find a place like is depicted in the movie, minus the crazy cult vibe. It's a gorgeous movie that might just make you think "maybe I should buy and island with a bunch of friends and go off the grid". If you do, let me know!
4. Don't Tempt Me: 2001
This movie is fantastic, and definitely unique. It's about two angels, one from Heaven, where it's black and white, set in France, and very chic; one from Hell, where it's hot, miserable, and they speak English; and earth, where they speak Spanish. It's one I found by chance cruising through netflix a few years ago. It's different and worth a watch!
5. The Way: 2010
This movie was really moving. A father decides to trek the El Camino Santiago trail, where his estranged son died. It really touches on the power of travel.
6. Into the Wild: 2007
This movie is based on the true story of Christopher McCandless who ventured in the Alaskan wilderness alone. His story not only provides lessons on the dangerous power of nature, but on the importance of sharing moments with others.
7. UP: 2009
Adventure is out there! I sobbed like a baby in this movie. Yes, I don't have children and I go to pixar movies...what?! If for some reason, you've managed to go these last five years without seeing this, do yourself a favor and go get it! The beginning of the movie serves as a cautionary tale of putting off your dreams. If you needed a little push to finally travel the world like you've always wanted, this movie will do it.
8. Finding Nemo: 2003
What, another cartoon? Yes! While the movie is about a father finding his son, Nemo. It's also about realizing how amazing the world out there is and how much you miss out on by staying in your comfort zone.
9. Under the Tuscan Sun: 2003
Is this movie a little sappy? Yes. But, it also takes you on a beautiful tour of Italy and reminds us that it's never to late to start over and have a happy ending. Well, damn, here I go getting sappy now too...
10. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: 2005
If you ask Siri "What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything" She'll correctly tell you "42". Which you won't understand if you don't watch this movie. It's a feel good goofy comedy about this crazy world we live in and the adventure that is right under our nose.
Did I miss an essential travel movie? Share it in the comments! I'm always on the look out for a good movie.
Have a great week, and happy travels!
Hi there! I'm Skeeter. I grew up moving a lot and that makes me a bit restless for travel and exploration. I started this blog with my husband Pat when we decided to backpack New Zealand for a year. We are always looking for the next adventure and are loving life. We're just your average couple with two sassy dogs and a love for travel. We're sharing our travels and the tips we pick up along the way.
Hello! I'm Liz. Blogging is very new to me, but I'm so excited to finally write as much as I talk!
