There and back again...our route around New Zealand
We're not in Kansas anymore...
May 6th: We will be arriving on the morning of May 6th, and heading to our hotel (Auckland City Hotel). We picked this hotel because of its proximity to the backpacker's car market, and to an office that we can get our new van registered. It appears to be a busy commercial area, but also close to the ocean, both pluses for our first days in New Zealand. We'll keep you posted on how it goes.
Stop 1: Auckland: We will be arriving on May 6th, 2010. We plan to spend a couple of days there. Our plans include: buying a van, buying supplies, picking up some local maps, exploring Auckland a little, and getting our bearings before we head north.
We have been camping around Whangarie for about 8 days, at Uretiti beach, and Omemure Beach (sp?)
May 19th: We have been camping for the last few days at Maitai bay on the Karikari pennisula a little north of Kerikeri. Kerikeri is a really cute town, it is really beautiful here.
June 21st: We have been in Whitianga for almost 2 weeks now. We have an apartment on Buffalo Beach Rd, and we love it here. We will be here for at least a couple of months. Whitianga is a really great town with about 3600 people. Everyone we've met is really nice!
~ November 10th: We traveled to Ragland to try our hand at some surfing. Raglan is one of the top surf destinations in NZ. There weren't any waves when we got there, but there were beautiful black sand beaches and a cool surf culture to enjoy
December 3rd: We flew from Auckland to Christchurch to begin our loop of the South Island. Our first night we camped in Arther's Pass just a couple hours drive from Christchurch. It was a beautiful night!
December 5th and 6th: We hiked to the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers on the West coast of the South Island. It was really amazing. We camped at Gillespie's Beach where we saw dolphins and there is a hike to a seal colony. Bring bug Spray!
Dec 7th: We stayed in Queenstown which is the adventure capital of NZ. They have a beautful blue lake there and lots of things to do. Bungy jumping was invinted here and can still be done at the original site.
Dec 8th and 9th:We stayed at beautiful Milford Sound. The drive there is the most beautiful place we have ever been. Thousands of waterfalls, torqoise blue rivers. Just amazing, but bring bug spray!
December 10th: We stayed in Invercargill, the home of the "World's Fastest indian". A cute town at the southern most tip of NZ
December 11'th and 12th. We stayed in Christchurch again ahead of our flight back to the U.S. Christchurch is an amazing city recovering from a severe Earthquake. Despite the damage it is still a beautiful city with lots of charm and things to do. We stayed at Hotel SO, which is a really neat hotel with ammenities that I've never seen before at a very resonable price, but the rooms are teeny tiny, but we would stay there again for sure.
